actions at scale
Action in concert with many other people can have far-reaching impacts. Collective action is one of the best tools we have to secure a sustainable future and move the needle on many intertwined aspects of the humanitarian & climate crises.

our team, taking action
On February 6th, 2023 a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck southern Turkey and northwestern Syria. The event caused widespread damage and fatalities in a context where thousands of refugees had already been displaced from Syria.
On February 10th, 2023, the UVA Humanitarian Collaborative, in partnership with Read for Action and the Environmental Resilience Institute, hosted a mapathon with Humanitarian OpenStreetMap.
A mapathon is a coordinated mapping event, and an opportunity for volunteers to connect digitally to create urgently needed data for communities around the world so that local and international decision-makers can use these maps and data to better respond to crises affecting these areas. Up-to-date maps are important for the success of many humanitarian initiatives around the world in responding to disasters.
